Laid Off Recomender

by mbaguy513 Sat Sep 20, 2008 8:12 pm

Hi,

My company just went through lay-offs 3 weeks ago. I was thinking of asking one of the people who was laid off to write one of my recs. I work at a Big 4 and this person was up for partner and didn't make it so when lay offs came he was an easy one for them to choose. However, he has lots of experience working directly with me and I know would write me a great rec. He is a great guy whom everyone still likes (so no hard feelings on his part), he was more of a victim of the circumstance.

He got a pretty decent severance package and with the poor economic conditions, I don't think he will be working again until 2009 sometime. Does the fact that he will be unemployed when he is writing my recs hurt the credibility or validity of the rec? Should I reconsider going with someone who is still employed at my firm but would not have as many good anecdotes about me for a rec?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Whether he's unemployed or not isn't going to make a difference.

What matters most is that he's worked with you closely for more than a year and can comment on your candidacy.
