Lack of "Business" experience

by mjfsutherland Wed Mar 03, 2010 1:16 am

I have a degree in computer and electrical engineering and have been working for the past 5 years in software and IT fields. I can probably demonstrate driven results, leadership roles, achievement of goals etc but as I have previously been focused in the technology industry I am lacking a business background. Will this greatly reduce my chances of getting into one of the top 10 schools. Taking this into account what level of gmat scores do I need to be achieving to stand a realistic chance.

Kind Regards

Mike

Hi Mike -

It's hard to answer your question without knowing more about your experiences, but if you can demonstrate business-skills: initiative, proven results, leadership, working with teams, building relationships, etc. in a non-business context and connect them to what you want to do in the future, your lack of business background will not necessarily hurt you. Schools see lots of applicants from various fields; what's important is what the applicant has done with the field to demonstrate managerial potential.

I can't answer about GMAT scores without knowing so many other factors, like what schools you're interested in, your undergraduate GPA, and the rest of your profile, but I hope I at least answered part of your question.

Best,
