Just took my GMAT... looking for an evaluation

by aaser018 Mon Aug 27, 2012 8:25 pm

Hi all,

Below are my stats:

Gender: Male
Location: Minnesota
Age: 24 (Pakistani-American)
GPA: 3.8 (Triple major: Finance, Marketing, Supply Chain)
School: University of Minnesota
GMAT: 650 (42Q/38V)
Experience:
1 year - M&A/Venture Capital for Fortune 500 company
1 year - Corporate Finance for the same Fortune 500 Company
6 months - Internet Marketing at Fortune 500 company
3 summer internships: Marketing and Finance at Various Fortune 500 companies

Other:
- Founded a children's book series for little Muslims growing up in North America. Authored 4 books, and have sold over 4500 copies in 6 countries since inception (last year)
- Secretary for one of the longest standing mosques in my state.
- Administrator and teacher at local Sunday School
(In each of these experiences, there are some exciting stories of impact)

Schools:
1. Harvard
2. Stanford
3. Chicago

Goals for post MBA:
- I want to be an entrepreneur

For me, the challenge is that I've been doing well on all of my GMAT practice exams... above 700. But on game day, I got the jitters and had poor performance. Wondering if it is necessary to retake, or if I could be competitive with my current profile.

Thoughts?

Hello,

Really interesting profile - love that you've written a successful series of children's books and that you are so active in your community. Professionally, your experience is impressive, but also seems somewhat inconsistent. Still, I think as long as you have a strong and logical career narrative that explains the jumps (seems that you've been getting closer to entrepreneurship now with the M&A/VC work), and as long as you've got strong professional leadership stories to complement your community stories, you'll be ok in this dimension. And now for the GMAT... unfortunately, a 650 is going to make it pretty tough to be competitive at your target schools. I would suggest a retake, especially if you've been scoring high on your practice tests.

Hope this helps,
Mili
