IR: Adaptive or No?

by SanjayG915 Tue Aug 12, 2014 2:18 pm

Hi, I'm hoping I haven't missed a question about this on the Forums (I reviewed them as per Stacy's post):

I can't figure out from mba.com whether the IR section is adaptive (like Verbal & Math) or not. Any ideas? If you're doing better, are you going to see tougher questions or is the block of 12 questions fixed at the beginning?

Make sure you know that, even though IR is non-adaptive, there's still no reason to strive for a "perfect" result. The highest score (8 on a scale of 8) is usually awarded if you get ≥9 of 12 problems correct. Sometimes even 8 out of 12, if the section is challenging enough according to group statistics.

Since IR is not adaptive, is there a penalty for not completing all questions? Or would the incomplete questions just count as incorrect? I don't plan to leave any questions blank. I am curious since it seems you only need to get 8 out of 12 right for the highest score. Thanks in advance.

Everything I've seen suggests that the penalty doesn't apply on IR. But I say that with the caveat that I've never seen an official ruling from the GMAC on it, so I'm not 100% sure. Maybe another instructor knows for certain...
