Interviews

by reed.parker Wed Feb 18, 2009 1:27 pm

Hi,

Everyone knows that an interview invitation is a good sign at pretty much all schools except Kellogg (mandatory interviews of all candidates). However, I am wondering what an interview invitation really means. Specifically I am curious what it means for your chances at HBS, Stanford, Wharton and Columbia. Do your chances of admission go up to 30% or to 50%? Or is it not that meaningful?

Is anyone accepted without an interview at these schools?

Thanks

Historically:

HBS ~50-60% of those interviewed get admitted
Stanford ~60% of those interviewed get admitted
Wharton ~40% of those interviewed get admitted
Columbia ~30% of those interviewed get admitted

For top schools, it's around 30-50% for most of the other top schools as well (other than Kellogg, which interviews everyone).

Getting an interview invite isn't a sign that you'll get in -- but a sign that you're competitive enough (i.e. the school isn't out of your league) to be considered, especially for schools outside of HBS and Stanford where they send out interview invites to a larger percentage of the applicants.

And yes, virtually everyone will need to interview to get admittance.
