Inorganic vs. Organic pesticides

by ngoc.chu Mon Apr 25, 2011 6:10 pm

Inorganic pesticides remain active on the surfaces of fruits and vegetables for several days after spraying, while organic pesticides dissipate within a few hours after application, leaving the surface of the sprayed produce free of pesticide residue. Therefore, when purchasing from a farm that uses inorganic pesticides, one must be careful to wash the produce thoroughly before eating it to prevent the ingestion of toxins. But one need not worry about ingesting pesticides when purchasing from farms that use only organic pesticides.

The argument above assumes that

A. Consumers are aware of the origins of the produce they purchase.
B. Produce from farms that use organic pesticides reaches the consumer within hours after it is picked or harvested.
C. No farm uses both organic and inorganic pesticides.
D. No pesticide is capable of penetrating the skin of a fruit or vegetable.
E. The use of either type of pesticide does not increase the cost of produce.

The conclusion of the passage is that one only needs to wash the produce from an inorganic farm but not those from an organic farm because the latter contain no traces of pesticides on the surface after a few hours. Clearly, this is based on the assumption that the consumers know which farm their produce come from in order to determine whether washing them is necessary. So why is answer A not correct?

Thank you.

the argument says, basically, this:
if you know that your produce comes from an organic farm, then you should not worry about pesticides.

this argument doesn't assume that all consumers know the origins of their produce -- it just applies only to the ones who do.
if (a) were an "assumption", then it would actually preclude the existence of consumers who are unaware of the origins of their produce. however, even if such consumers exist, there is still nothing wrong with this argument; those unaware consumers would just have to wash their produce.

here's an analogy:

Some people have their mother's name tattooed on their arms. If a man has his mother's name tattooed on his arm, then you will know his mother's name when you meet him.

--> the above argument certainly does not assume that all men have their mothers' names tattooed on their arms.

same line of reasoning in the argument above.
