Information about admissions for the Top 15 B Schools

by rohitsujirnayak Sun Mar 23, 2014 10:24 am

Hi,

I would like to enroll for an MBA at one of the Top 15 B Schools. I hope to get some guidance.

I reside and work in India. I have 7+ years of Work ex. I've worked for 3 years in Corporate Sales (Biotechnology, Telematics) and in Human Potential Consulting (2.5 years). I've been an entrepreneur for the last couple of years- I run a digital and social media agency for startups, and also one of India's first 3D printing companies.

I took up the GMAT in Oct 2009, and I have a score of 650.

I would like to know if would it be a good idea to apply to the B Schools with my current scores or redo the GMAT.

Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated!

Cheers!

Hi there,

Thanks for posting. With a 650 GMAT and fairly average work experience, the top 15 will be challenging... not impossible per se but a reach. I would suggest looking at schools in the 15-30 range, and/or considering a re-take. Schools do take the highest score, so it doesn't hurt to give it another shot if you are super focused on top 15. But a higher score also won't guarantee that you'll get in either; schools consider your entire profile and application and decide which applicants will make the best fit for their class. There are a lot of great schools outside top 15 too! ;)

Hi Ms Kedrowski,

Thank you for answering my queries. I will retake the GMAT and aim for a higher score.

l do have a follow up question to something you mentioned in your response-

You mentioned that my profile was average- What would I need to do to move it into something more exceptional?

The Indian Business landscape is really tough for Technology, Knowledge, consulting services Entrepreneurs- with more than 85% of Businesses folding in the first year. In this scenario, the ones who survive have something very valuable to provide to the market. We've grown over two years- in terms of clients, headcount, experiences and business and carved a niche for both my businesses.

I always thought that was something that made my profile distinctly distinguishable (if not exceptional).

So any direction with respect to improve my profile would be most helpful.

Also, there are some pretty amazing Schools in the 15-30 group. and I am looking at a few of them too. Will keep you posted .

Thanks again!

Hi Rohit,

I take your point; especially when you explain further on the success of your business, it does help you stand out and differentiate from other applicants without that experience. I suggest you really showcase that experience in your application and interview.... will help you to be remembered for that experience, with the adcomm will likely appreciate in the classroom setting (all that you can contribute based on that experience). Certainly the GMAT still could be higher to focus on top 15, but that's a personal decision. ;) Good luck!

Thank you for your feedback and suggestions.

I do plan to retake the GMAT, and hopefully get a better score.

Will keep you updated about my prep as well as other moments of paranoia and exuberance :)
