Hi MGMAT Experts,

I completely agree E is the best answer among given answer choices. I only have one question regarding the past perfect tense in choice E- "moisture EXHALED by tourist HAD RAISED the humidity" somehow leads me to think HAD RAISED took place before EXHALED.

As Ron would say, OA can never be wrong. So does this imply that "exhaled" is just part of a modifier that modifies "moisture". So "exhaled" in this question doesn't have any tense attribute?

Ron and other MGMAT experts could you chime in?

Thank you in advance.

__ing and __ed modifiers never have their own tenses.

Hello Ron,

I was comparing your explanation for option D on page 2 of this thread with – OG 12 – Q#112 correct answer C. - brain is widely...
One question is using verb-ing and the other is a helping verb.

So this rule of works only if it's modifier but not for verbs/helping verbs?

Thanks for the help,

Naren

i'm sorry, but i can't really tell what you are asking.

can you please ask your question specifically?

(it would also help if you could quote any earlier posts to which you're referring.)

thanks!

Hi Ron,

Sorry the question wasn't clear.

In late 1997,the chambers inside the pyramid of the Pharaoh Menkaure at Giza were closed to visitors for cleaning and repairing due to moisture exhaled by tourists, which raised its humidity to such levels so that salt from the stone was crystallizing and fungus was growing in the walls.

D)because of moisture that was exhaled by tourists raising the humidity within them to levels so high as to make the salt from the stone crystallize.

- Your answer to question asked by one of the students :-
can i eliminate (D) because "raising the humidity" incorrectly modify "tourists" ?

You mention yes, that is valid.

- Somehow I thought this was an essential modifier, more info by Ben for another question :- https://www.manhattanprep.com/gmat/foru ... t8151.html

Can you tell me how come in option D (by tourists) is not a essential modifier, whereby 'raising the humidity' is not appropriately modifying 'moisture exhaled'?

Thanks,

Naren

What makes you think it IS an essential modifier?

Hi Tim,

I thought we needed to know who created the moisture, without that we would be guessing 'who or from where this moisture came'

Let me know if this valid and if there is proper way to find if it's not.

Thanks

Another example where the noun which touches the preposition is not the one being modified:

in GMAC's usage, "no comma + __ing" modifiers always modify the noun directly before them.
i don't recall ever seeing a counterexample in an official problem. if you know one, please point it out!

this is irrelevant, since the modifier at hand does not contain a preposition.
