In her 26 years in the forests of Gombe

by TristaC509 Mon Feb 09, 2015 10:29 pm

In her 26 years in the forests of Gombe, Jane Goodall collected data that proved that chimpanzees exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from each one to others by imitating and practicing
A. exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from each one to others by imitating and practicing
B. will exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitating and practicing
C. will exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitation and practice
D. exhibit the kind of curiosity by which new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitation and practice
E. exhibit the kind of curiosity where new patterns of behavior and expression are passed on to others by imitation and practice
hi,instructors. I can tell the difference between abc"curiosity,so that"and "curiosity by which/where",but I have no idea which structure I should use in this question.

what's your understanding of what those things mean?

can you write correct sentences using "so that...", "by which...", and/or "where..."?
(this is the best test of whether you understand any particular construction: if you can form simple sentences that use it correctly, then you understand it. if you can't, then you don't.)

(1) Basically, 'so.. that' is used to show intent..

He did X, so that Y can happen

(2) 'Where' is used to literally denote physical location..

Chimpanzees do not show curiosity to pass the behavior.. not meaningful.. So based on (1) and (2) , we can eliminate A, B, C and E.

Experts, am I correct..

Team,

Please help.

I am not sure whether the usage of 'so that' is correct in options A,B and C. I have read the above posters but I cannot understand it completely. So that is used to show a reason for some action.

I don't know if chimpanzees exhibit some behavior because of some reason.

Please confirm.

well, sure you do.

'so that' implies that chimpanzees are actually thinking, 'Hmm... if i exhibit curiosity, then i'll be able to catch on to my fellow chimps' behavior patterns. Hey, that sounds like a great idea! I think I'll do that!"

...no.

sure.

just remember, your common sense will be integral in determining 'intended meaning' (since there are no rules for what is 'intended').

Hi Ron.
For this question, why the correct answer uses the noun verb? I think the subject is invloved in the idea, so we should use Verb+ing.

the sentence is written very specifically to emphasize the curiosity per se.
ironically, the sentence is written expressly to MINIMIZE the importance given to the chimpanzees themselves!

if the point was to emphasize the involvement of the chimps, then the sentence would be written with the chimps as the subject. this would be quite easy to do: ...they transmit patterns of behavior by imitating them...

instead the author has taken a sentence whose earlier subject is the chimps and has specifically changed the sentence (into a passive form) so that the chimps ARE NOT the subject anymore.
that's a pretty strong indication that the point is to de-emphasize the chimps, and to emphasize the cognitive process itself, as much as possible.

also, MUCH more importantly...

ZihaoJ864 Wrote:Hi Ron.

why do people do this?
this kind of thinking is never productive.
this kind of thinking is always a waste of time.

DO NOT question the correct answers!

here's a handy FAQ:

Q: Is the correct answer correct?
A: Yes.

Q: Is the correct answer wrong?
A: No.

Q: I disagree with the correct answer. Who's wrong, me or GMAC?
A: You.

Q: I wrote this other version. Is it better than the correct answer?
A: No.

Hi Ron, I have difficulties in understanding "by which" in the correct answer.
By which = by means of.
Eg:
He darted after the criminal by which he wanted to catch him up.

But in this question, it already says "new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitation and practice"

what is the relationship between by which (curiosity) and by imitation and practice?
Are there 2 means at the same time?

Besides, shall we replace by imitation and practice with by imitating and practicing ?

Thank you.

here's a simpler sentence:

Theorem X was proved by induction by several professors.
('induction' is one method used to prove mathematical theorems)

This chapter introduces induction, the method by which theorem X was proved by several professors.

do you see how these sentences work?
