In California, a lack of genetic variation

by Yu-MingH64 Tue May 29, 2018 11:34 am

HI,

[Question text removed]

Question: the answer is D. I got it wrong because I thought the subject of "limit" is "the kind" (singular, and thus should be limits). Can you help me understand why the subject of limit here is "struggles" and not "the kind"?

thanks,

Unfortunately you're not allowed to post questions from the Official Guide Review here. Please read the rules before posting.

I agree that this is a tricky one. You probably know that the word 'that' is a noun modifier. The general rule we say is that it modifies the noun before it. However, it's quite common to squeeze another modifier between the noun and the 'that', for example: 'The bowl of apples that is on the table ...' is
correct. This makes things a bit harder to work out.

In the case of this problem, I would make up a few examples yourself and spot the pattern. Here's one: 'I don't like the kind of animals that live here.' and 'The kind of animal that lives...'. You'll see that the 'that' refers to the animal or animals, not the 'kind'.
