Hypothetical subjunctive - Helen SC

by ParthJ26 Thu Mar 29, 2018 12:36 pm

Dear Sage, Hi.

SC Guide 6th Edition, Pg 199 and 208.

1. If Sage ate pizza tomorrow, then he would become ill. CORRECT.

2. If Sage were to eat pizza, then he would become ill. CORRECT.

3. Helen would feel better if she swallowed this pill. CORRECT.

Would the following sentence also be correct?

4. Helen would feel better if she were to swallow this pill. ?

Thanks in advance.

Nice examples 1 to 3!

As for number 4, that's fine too. Remember that 'if...then' constructions can work both ways round. The phrase 'if she were to swallow' means the same as 'if she swallowed'.
