how well do the MGMAT scores mimic actual GMAT scores?

by somnath Tue Jul 29, 2008 9:12 am

i have used the MGMAT test (pack of 6) and scored between 670 to 710 in them(save the last one which i am yet to take). what kind of score should i expect in the real GMAT? i have taken my G-date on 11th august,2008 and the low scores in MGMAT is demoralising me!

Hi Somnath,

The ManhattanGMAT CAT Exams are a tool meant to help guide your studying rather than provide you with an exceedingly accurate score for test day. The GMAT itself can vary by up to as much as 30 points from your "true" testing level on a given day. Hence, if you are a 650 level test taker, you can score anywhere from a 620 to a 680 and still be at the same ability level. Our tests, which are re-calibrated for accuracy, can vary by up to 40 - 50 points depending on the test taker. With that said, if you are consistently scoring in the 670 - 710 range suggests that your overall range is a 620 - 720 on the low end and 660 - 760 on the high end, meaning that I would venture to guess that your score will be in the 660 - 700 range on test day.

These scores are actually quite good, so don't feel demoralized by the results. It's always hard to predict how you will perform on test day! The most accurate test out there, however, is one released by GMAC itself called GMATPrep. Because this is released by the same people who administer the real test, its accuracy is superior to any test prep company's practice tests. Hence, I would suggest taking one or both of the GMATPrep tests offered in order to more accurately predict your score on test day.

hi mike
thanks for your reply. i had taken the GMATprep exam at the start of my preparation in june. I had got 710. However, after revising OG i felt that my results in the next GMATprep will be skewed.so i never gave the 2nd one. i am expecting a better score than what you have predicted(and i am sure you too would love to be proven wrong !) . apart from the free test in MGMAT, i have given 4 tests. do i have 2 more tests to go? or do you include the free test in the pack of 6?

regards

I'll let Mike answer that question about the 6 tests (I'm not sure), but you should go ahead and use that second GMATPrep test. Although GMATPrep does include OG questions, it has plenty of questions that aren't in OG. Most of my students say that, if they recognize any OG questions at all, they usually only recognize a couple.

i got the answer to that.MGMAT tests consist of 6 tests apart from the free test that everyone can give.
however, i am in a dilemma. I gave the 5th test today and got 760 which is way above what i usually score(680-710). i realised that the computer had thrown me very few 700-800 level questions. I guess i have exhausted the tough questions bin. should i give the 6th exam or should i stop this artificial inflation of score(and confidence!!)...??

Hi Somnanth,

The Free GMAT Exam is actually a part of the 6 CATs that ManhattanGMAT offers. However, the free test contains a separate and smaller pool of questions. As for your other question, please refer to this thread for a complete and thorough answer.

thank you for MGMAT!

Hi Stacey and Mike,
I would like to share the good news of my GMAT score. I have got 750 (q50/v41/essay5.5). I am really indebted to the tough questions I had faced in MGMAT tests. They are just like the actual tough GMAT questions. I was never uncomfortable during the test..I was nervous with the MGMAT scores which ranged from 680 to 760. The last score was due to the fact that all 700-800 level questions were exhausted. I revised all the mistakes in the last week and understood where my concepts went wrong.
I hope my applications sail through as well just like the GMAT did!!
regards
Somnath

P.S. thanks for tolerating my whining pre-exam!!
