How to make my appication better

by r.k.lars Fri Apr 08, 2011 7:39 pm

Hey I am 23 years old and looking to apply (and get accepted) to a top 5 business school in two years or so. I was hoping someone could tell me what my chances are and what I need to do in the next 2 years to improve those chances. Here is a brief profie:

GPA - 3.73 Accounting
GMAT - 760
Work - Ernst & Young with my major clients being HP and Facebook. I will have 2 to 3 years work experience going into my MBA

Credentials- CPA in the state of California
Other- Speak Vietnamese (I am a white male)
-Spent a significant amount of time teaching free English classesto Vietnamese people newly arrived in the USA. For which I wrote the curriculum
-Teach early morning religious classes to highschool aged youth for free.
-Probably not super relavant, but I like to rockclimb, snowboard and am an Eagle Scout.

Any feedback would be helpful.

Thanks,

Hi r.k.lars,

Thanks for writing in. Congratulations on a stellar GMAT score, and for thinking about your application so far in advance. From what I can tell your academic credentials are top-notch and so is your community service. I would spend this time making sure you craft your story well -- why is it that you are seeking an MBA and what will the 2-year experience help you achieve? This information is quite important -- especially at the top-5 schools where many candidates have excellent academic credentials.

You can also use this period to keep a diary of your leadership experience at work. Record moments where you think you made good decisions or exhibited certain skills, and you can refer to that diary when it's time to write your essays.

Best of luck!
