How to decline an acceptance offer

by Guest Sun Jan 11, 2009 1:46 pm

Hi Alex,

I've decided I don't want to attend a program I've been accepted to. Aside from sending in the response form saying I've decided not to attend, is it also a good idea to call the people on the adcom I've been in touch with and let them know?

Also, on the response form, there is an option to defer enrollment to the following year. I don't expect to enroll in this program in even the following year, but if I ever lost my job unexpectedly it would be nice to have the option open. Is there any reason why I shouldn't do this instead of just decline the offer? How does the deferal process work? I know they have to be approved by the adcom.

Thanks in advance

If you decline to attend, you can simply send the response form. No need to call them up - it's a waste of their time and yours (the adcom will simply offer your seat to someone on the waitlist who will more than happily take your spot).

As for deferrals, that's something that is handled on a case by case basis, which you will have to speak to the adcom about.
