How to Address Difficult GMAT Breakdown

by MBABound Mon Jan 05, 2009 12:46 pm

I am in need of some professional advice.

I am about to turn in my applications to Stanford, Tuck, and Virginia. I took the GMAT and scored a 690, which I think puts me in the game at these schools. The problem is my score breakdown: 42V (95), 40Q (59), 6.0 AWA.

I have a 3.9 GPA from a masters civil engineering program at a top US school, and have earned A's in accounting, statistics, and calculus courses in undergrad. Do you think this will be enough to quiet any concerns about my GMAT score?

How should I approach this when submitting my application? I'm hoping this could work somewhat in my favor by showing that I am well-rounded (silver lining...).

Thank you!

I'm not sure how scoring low on the quant can make you seem well rounded (???).

Anyhow, a low score won't ever be an asset - it's just a matter of how much of a negative it will be. In your case, it's probably not a huge deal (most adcoms won't be concerned about your ability to handle the quant in an MBA), although the schools you are applying to can easily ding you for that reason alone if the other aspects of your application isn't particularly remarkable.
