How much does AWA count when admissions analyze GMAT scores?

by guest Thu Sep 18, 2008 2:51 am

Hi,

I am wondering how much AWA counts toward the analysis of GMAT scores? I studied very hard the last time I took the test (Oct 2007) and only ended up with a low 590 (Q39 V32). I am the weakest in math, but yet I scored a lot higher in math than I did verbal. I got a 6 in AWA although I'm not sure how that will impact their perception of my low GMAT. I am set to take the exam again in a week but my score has not increased significantly. I am very strong in essay writing as I am a liberal arts major. I didn't take a single AWA practice and managed a 6 but not sure how I got so low on the verbal.

I am very worried and stressed as I am aiming for top 10 and only recently decide that I need to expand my scope and am now applying to top 15. I know it is a low score and I am hoping to rely on my work experience, extracurriculars, recommendations, and essays. Background is top public university, top strategy consulting firm, and now working at a successful startup that has now been acquired. Am I aiming too high?

Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you.

Admissions consultants, can you please help answer the following? This post is from the same person above.

I am extremely concerned about my GMAT score and have been studying for about 1.5 years now which has taken up too much of my personal life so I'm not sure about retaking a third time. I took the kaplan class a year ago and didn't find it very helpful. I am doing my second retake again this month but my score doesnt seem to have improved much which is causing me great worry.

To add a bit more detail to the below, I graduated from cal in 2005 as a humanities major. i did two internships in college at microsoft and hitachi as product managers, worked in strategy consulting at a top strategy firm upon college, then joined a technology startup helping to run their business development arm. the startup has since been acquired by a big public company in its space, and I am working through the integration and they are leveraging the methodology I have created in their sales teams across the US and worldwide.

In terms of extracurricular, I have two main ones out of college. I've jumpstarted the startup's inactive involvement in the community by creating a community initiatives program in partnership with a foundation started by venture capitalsts whose sole purpose is to develop corporate philanthropy in the startup environment. Since then I have successfully planned and engaged members of the company through four big corporate events. In addition, I am also a volunteer consultant for a HBS nonprofit consulting organization and have participated in two big projects so far.

I was extremely active in college, held many research positions in venture capital and as a TA for a mba course at cal, was in a community service fraternity, outreach director of the student government, and worked 20 hrs / week. My gpa was a 3.3

I plan to apply this year and hope to get your perspective on my chances at bschool. My first choice is kellogg. I am also aiming for michigan, chicago gsb, yale, stern.

I have worked hard to build up my experience but am very concerned about the gmat score's affects on my chances. Any views would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I hate to say it, but your GMAT is going to be a major issue no matter how strong the rest of your profile is.

Re-take the exam. Do what it takes to get that score as high as you can. Even if it's in the 600s, it's better than what you have.

And *ahem* rather than Kaplan you may want to look at Manhattan GMAT. My guess is you need to be approaching the exam prep in a different way than you've been preparing. Maybe getting another test prep company or hiring a private tutor will help.

I wish I could tell you something else.
