How long to wait before retaking the GMAT?

by JasonC665 Thu Jun 04, 2015 12:43 pm

I believe this was mentioned at some point during the course or I may have read it in a textbook, but what it the ideal length of time to wait (and prep) before retaking the GMAT. I would like to say the rule of thumb was one month, but I am not entirely sure. Guidance? Thanks.

You're required to wait a minimum of 31 days, and we recommend that you plan in at least one re-take just in case, so that's where the one month idea is coming from: you need to give yourself a minimum of on month for any potential re-take. :)

There are two broad scenarios:
(1) You got almost the score that you wanted but you're looking for a little more and just need to tweak some things to get there. Typically, those in this category aren't looking for an improvement of more than 50 points. In this case, ideally take the test within about 4 to 6 weeks so that you don't lose momentum.

(2) You're decently below the score that you wanted and you need some significant work on content, timing, or both to get to where you need. In this case, you're looking at 6 to ?? weeks, depending on the distance that you want to go and the amount of time you have to study.

Hello!

I wanted to tack on to this question - how long of a study break do you recommend between tests?

I just took the GMAT for the first time today, and am so close to the score I'd like (within 50 points), so would you suggest taking 1-2 weeks off to reset, or just continuing my study?

Thank you!

First, I need to update a fact in my last post: the GMAT is about to change the waiting period for a re-take! Starting July 19th, you'll only have to wait 16 days to re-take the test.

Okay, if you are feeling burned out, take a week or two off (but not more than two). You won't lose all your hard work. In fact, you'll likely be better off with a little bit of a rest.

If you don't feel burned out, then you can keep going...but I'm assuming that you're asking because you are feeling a little burned out. Basically, anyone, at any time, can (and should!) take time off when they are feeling burned out. Anything up to about 2 weeks is fine!
