high verbal, low quant

by jamiestepanek Sat Sep 14, 2013 8:44 pm

I received a 46, 68% for quantitative and 42, 96% for verbal. Total score was 720, but will my quantitative score keep me from getting into a top school?

My calculus grade from college is low (C-). I majored in Economics, but econ classes at my university were notoriously difficult and I received mostly B's.

Should I be worried, and is there anything I can do short of retaking the test?

Thank you

The best person to ask is an admissions consultant - I can help you increase the quant score, but the admissions side of things is not my area of expertise.

If you took our class, you've got a free 30-minute consult with MBAMission - look in your student center for the details. Might as well take advantage of it!

You can also ask in the Ask An Admissions Consultant folder here.

My 2 cents (but I'm not an expert in this area): if your grades were higher then the 46 in quant might be okay (because, although 68th percentile sounds lower, there are only 5 scores higher than that... the schools know that scores are "bunched" at the high end on quant, so - anecdotally - they're not as concerned now with people getting 80th+ percentile there). But you don't have any A's in quant-focused classes either... so my guess is that an admissions consultant might tell you that you need to raise that score.

Oh, wait, but I have two questions. First, how did you do on IR? Did you get that score yet? (takes about 10 days from test date)

Second, when you say "top school," what do you mean exactly? Are you taking Harvard and Stanford, like top 5? Or the lower half of top 10, that kind of thing? The very crazy top schools are... well, crazy. The others are more reasonable. :)

Thank you Stacy, this is very helpful.

I actually took the GMAT last May and am just now wrapping up applications, so I did not have to take the IR portion of the test.

I did get A's in Finance and Statistics, and was thinking about writing the optional essay to point that out.

I'd love if I could go to Northwestern or maybe Chicago.

I will see if I can't follow up with an Admissions Consultant, but your opinion is appreciated! :)
