High Verbal/Low Quant: Part-Time Programs in Chicago

by Chicago2013Applicant Tue Dec 11, 2012 12:18 am

I am looking to apply to evening MBA programs in Chicago (Chicago Booth, Northwestern Kellogg). My GMAT Score of 690 is within the ranges I have seen for these programs, but my verbal score is much higher (44, 97%) than my quantitative score (40, 52%). Do you think this quant score will be a significant detractor from my application? Does it need to be addressed, or should I not be concerned given my overall score?

Other aspects of my application include: 5+ years of work experience at two premier firms (investment bank, investment manager), and an undergraduate degree from a top 20 school (USNews). I also studied abroad at the London School of Economics while in undergrad. And, I have completed Level I of the CFA Program (and hope to continue pursuing that designation).

Your thoughts/feedback would be much appreciated!

Hello,

I studied abroad at LSE, too :) Great program!

So, unfortunately, the answer to your question is "yes." Your low quant score will be a concern for Chicago and Kellogg - (quant scores are weighted more heavily than verbal). At the very least you should address this in an optional statement. You could also enroll in some quant classes (accounting, stats, finance) at a local accredited university and try to get an "A". But ideally, you would retake the test and boost the quant score.

Also, you should know that for these schools, it's recommended that you have a 700+ overall score with an 80% or higher on each section.

Good luck,
Mili
