I certainly missed the following takeaway:

IF YOU SEE A CRAZY QUESTION, TRY TO SIMPLIFY / REPHRASE / MANIPULATE IT

Thanks Ron!

Hello Ron,
Can this problem be solved using weighted average??
Our question is
is 0.20a+0.10(b+c) > 0.15 (a+b+c) ?
i.e 0.20a+0.10(b+c)/(a+b+c) >0.15.
i.e 20a+10(b+c)/(a+b+c) >15

a being the most expensive and c being the least.

Now using the number line method for statement I

10------------15------------20
(b+c)............................(a)

We know that cost of a is 50 and b+c would be at the max 40.
so the weighted average would be towards a. i.e always greater that 15.
Let me know if this approach is correct.

Thanks

yes, that does work... and it's absolutely ingenious (i'd never think to do that in a thousand years).

on the other hand, it does seem to ... belabor the problem quite a bit, as compared to the more "standard" ways of solving.
