HELP! Profile Eval for EMBA

by james.a.ocampo Sat Nov 20, 2010 6:16 pm

I just took my GMAT for the second time. I scored less than the first!

I have a couple questions:

1. Is it true that schools take the applicant's best score, even if it was a previous score?

2. Is a Wharton or Columbia EMBA a complete lost cause with a high GMAT of 630 (Q47 V32)? I'm 35, have 10 years at a Big 4 consulting firm, significant leadership experience, and have had numerous leadership roles in extra-curricular and volunteer activities?

Hi James,

Thanks for writing in.

1) Yes that is true -- traditionally schools only consider your highest score.

2) I know EMBA admissions can be a bit different than full-time programs, and your work experience and extracurriculars may play a stronger role in your application. I did some quick research and for Columbia EMBA the 20-80 GMAT range was 600-740, and for Wharton the 10-90 range is 640-760. Based on that I would say a 630 doesn't make you an immediate "lost cause," but you will need to recognize this as a weakness in your application and play up your other strengths to counteract your GMAT.

Good luck!
