HELP needed to improve Verbal score

by ashish.nitrkl Sun Jul 22, 2012 11:29 pm

Hi ,

Need help from you any MGMAT expert.
I have my GMAT on 11th Aug. I am scoring in MGMAT tests around 650-680 range. My concern is about Verbal. The score varies from 32-35. I want to improve it to 38+. I realized that the mistakes which I am making in SC and CR are silly ones. When I review the questions and try to solve it, I get it right most of the time. I have done OG12 with 60% accuracy on SC and CR. Then I did Verbal review with accuracy of 70% in both SC and CR. I want to improve more on verbal till my exam. Please give me some tips.

I dont want to follow any other material to study now. But I am thinking of solving OG13 new questions.
I am left with MGMAT6 and GMATPrep1 and 2 tests which I will be taking before actual exam.
Please respond and give me some suggestions what to do to improve my accuracy on verbal.

JFYI, I started my preparation with 510 on GMATPrep1(old format) with verbal score of 16. In my MGMAT#5 I scored Q49,V32, 660 yesterday.

Regards,
Ashish

Nice work on your improvement so far!

Don't start doing new Qs yet. First, go back to the old ones. You need to figure out precisely WHY you are making the careless mistakes that you're making. There could be multiple reasons. Once you know WHY, that tells you what you need to do to try to get better.

It might have to do with being more systematic in working through the answers and tracking your thoughts on your scrap paper.

It might have to do with breaking some bad habits, such as relying on what "sounds good" or "sounds bad" on SC, or not checking for proof in the passage on specific RC questions.

It might have to do with reading more carefully if you are, for example, skipping / missing a word here and there and that changes everything (either in the argument / passage or in the answers).

And so on. You can't get much better until you actually know why you're losing these points right now!

So go figure that out. Once you do, if you need advice about how to handle any of those things, please come back and ask.

Also, you only have about 2 weeks left. That may or may not be enough time, just FYI. Just in case, think about whether you would rather postpone your test to go for your original goal score or take your test when scheduled but go for a lower goal score. That way, if you do have to make that decision, you'll already have an idea of what you want to do.
