by 2.maneet Sun Feb 20, 2011 6:24 pm

Hi

I was wondering if any of the admission consultants could please evaluate my profile.

Age: 31
Work Experience: 8 years Healthcare as a clinician ( 5 years in USA and 3 years in UK)

I have worked in different Hospitals, Nursing homes, Outpatient clinics and Community Home Therapy services. Very well traveled. Nature of work is mainly clinical, no direct management except managing resources in the clinic/hospital, managing clinical documentation, managing 3-4 assistants and making sure people get seen and improve.
Some marketing and lots of health awareness education ( free clinics etc, talks etc)

Nationality: Indian

GPA: 3.8
GMAT score: 590, q39, v 32 awa 4 ( feb 2010 only 1 attempt )

During school and college years: I was involved in most teams ( soccer , cricket, swimming , badminton . Sport captain while I was in school ( assisted in organizing sports events with our school House .
College : "Sports in charge" ( got elected in college student committee in charge of planning events, I was in charge of organizing all sports related events ) .only 5 people get elected amongst 2000-3000 students.

Voluntary work: assist disabled people and seniors >70 or older to get in/out transport buses( so that they can go shopping to walmart etc
Health Awareness clinics/staff education: providing suggestions to improve safety and independence at Nursing homes for people with Developmental disabilities and mental retardation

Career Goal : To get into healthcare consulting
Dream school

Booth
Darden
Wharton ( MBA with specialization in healthcare management
LBS
Insead

Ongoing Barriers to improving GMAT score:
Non native speaker (stuck between 31-39 on Verbal , mostly close to 32-34)
Haven’t studied maths formally since high school ( I was great in maths during school years and consistently scored over 80% back then ) Now I score around 44-45

Many thanks

Hi Mo,

Thanks for writing in. Your background as a clinician and medical school experience definitely help differentiate you as a candidate, but unfortunately I think your GMAT will be an obstacle to admission at those top schools you list. I recognize English is not your native language and it has been a while since you did classroom math, but at the same time the schools need to feel comfortable that you'll be able to excel in their classroom environments.

You don't mention whether you are planning to apply for Class of 2013 or 2014, but I would recommend doing a Round 1 application for next year, rather than trying to compete for a final spot in this application season. Schools will likely be a bit more receptive to a lower GMAT score in Round 1.

Then I'd recommend selecting 1-2 schools from your list and making those your "reach" targets, and then applying to about 3 schools from the low Tier 1/Tier 2 range, to give you more diversity with your chances of admissions.

Best of luck!
