Guidance

Is the MBA path the one for me? Steps to clarify/confirm?

I am a chemical engineer though wasnt happy number crunching, operating equipment and working alone for long periods in the lab.

Marketing or consulting sparked my interest. I was interested in marketing because I love collaborating with people/teams and I am interested in psycology of influencing/sales. Management consulting was also interesting to me because I value leadership, teaching and development and have a passion for ideas that influence people in a positive way...

Some additional details/thoughts: I am an ENFP (MYERS BRIGGS), Enterprise/Social (strong). I'm less driven by increasing profits than by increasing people's effectiveness. I also do not have a clear job I am working towards at this point.

I feel my vision is less clear than other people and I am not sure if this is information worthwhile in persuing an MBA degree. Any ideas on steps to take to solidify whether MBA is the path best for me?

Thanks - J

Hi J,

So of course only you can decide if an MBA is the move for you. It's a significant time and financial investment so you do need to weigh carefully if the decision is right for you. While you don't have to have your exact post-MBA role nailed down completely when applying, you do need to have a sense of the skills you are looking to build in business schools and the types of jobs where these skills will be useful. MBA programs want to bring in students that will achieve success in a business function after graduating. Your job is to at least demonstrate that you have enough focus and potential to be one of those students.

Hope this was helpful!

Best of luck,
