Guidance

by tandon.abhinav89 Sun Sep 18, 2011 2:06 pm

Hi,

I've only just begun with my journey towards getting a management degree from a reputed institute. Would appreciate some pointers to put me in the right direction. Recently got over with my under-graduation in Computer Science from a reputed private institute in India with a cgpa of 7/10. Will be starting work as a business analyst in an analytics driven firm which provided business solutions. I recently took my gmat and scored a 700(Q49, V36). I have a fairly strong academic track record all throughout school (mostly above 90%) and decent extracurricular - headed several student councils and positions of responsibilities involving leadership, interned with a prominent think tank and at other places and hold a level 4 charter in financial markets.

I gave my gmat with hardly 15 days of preparation and almsot no strategy. Since I'm just starting out, I'd appreciate advice as to whether I should retake my gmat, if yes then what score should i target and what other ways can I improve upon my application to be in a position to target top b-schools.

Thanks :)

Hi Tandon,

Thanks for writing in. A 700 is a strong score, and I especially like the even split between Verbal and Quant in terms of percentage. Since you have a lot of time you may want to take the test one more time to see if you can get in the 720+ range, as you're coming from a background where your cohort is characterized by strong GMAT scores.

In terms of other things you can do to prep with this long lead time -- I suggest selecting a community service activity that you can involved in to show post-college leadership and engagement. You can also keep a running journal of your work experience and your accomplishments so it's very easy to to refer to it when you need to think back to material for your essays.

Best of luck,

Daniel Richards
