GMATPREP question

by rschunti Sat Dec 08, 2007 6:23 pm

The computer company has announced that it will purchase the color-printing division of a rival company for $950 million, which is part of a deal that will make it the largest manufacturer in the office color-printing market.
A) million, which is part of a deal that will make
B) million, a part of a deal that makes
C) million, part of a deal making
D) million as a part of a deal to make
E) million as part of a deal that will make

I eliminated option B, C and D because later part has to be in future tense based on non-underlined part.Am I correct in assuming this. Is this the only error in these options.
Also I am not able to find errors between options A and E. Pls can you help me identify which one is correct and which one is wrong and why?

There is error in A :- which point to near noun that is illogical . I think best thing is to add summative word such as deal and since the company will take over in future hence the deal will make is correct

E is correct

yep - choice a uses 'which', which must refer to the nearest thing before the comma. this doesn't make sense: it says that the $950 million is part of the deal, whereas what's meant is that the transaction is part of the deal.

incidentally, this is another example of a problem on which a seemingly ambiguous pronoun is not corrected: the second 'it' could technically refer either to the purchasing company or to the rival company (although the latter would make no sense). interesting.

Hello Ron,
As always I wanna discuss the wrong answer choices. :)

IN choices B and C - >B) million, a part of a deal that makes
C) million, part of a deal making

Are the bolded portions above noun appositives or summative modifiers ? Is the usage incorrect here {ignoring the other error in the construction} ?

My doubt is how do I decide whether a particular modifier is an appositive(describing the word right before the comma) or a summative(abstract) modifier ?

i don't know what a "summative modifier" is; i have never heard that term before. in any case, the term "appositive" encompasses both concrete and abstract appositives.

here is a thread on this problem with 34 posts:

if you have any further questions after reading that whole thread, please post them there, not here. thanks.
