GMAT Score Report Results: 640

by sophia.lin12345 Thu Oct 17, 2013 11:33 am

Official score report came in. Got a GMAT score of 640.

Score Breakdown:
AWA - 5
Integrated Reasoning - 3
Quantitative - 45
Verbal - 33

This has been consistent with my score results on the Manhattan GMAT and GMAT Prep Practice Exams.

Concerns:

1. I have a low integrated reasoning score. How much will business schools take that into account?
2. My verbal is low compared to my quantitative...will business schools take that into account?
3. My verbal and quantitative scores are slightly below a 70th percentile ranking, BUT my overall score is at 73rd percentile.

Despite the above concerns, I am planning to apply to business schools with an average GMAT score of 640, 650 or whose score ranges include a GMAT score of 640-650, so I am not sure if I should re-take the exam. What do you think?

Hi there,

In terms of the IR, schools are looking at it but still working on finalizing how much to include it in admissions decisions, so generally I'd say that it's not hugely crucial, BUT a 3 is pretty low. So it could be a small negative on your application. The verbal being lower than quant is usually not a huge problem, though of course the higher on everything the better. If schools you are targeting have a 640-650 average GMAT, likely the decision will be based on the rest of your profile and application, with essays having the potential to play a large impact. So it depends on you--- if you did retake and scored higher, it'd increase your chances at those same programs. But you have to balance where to spend your time and effort and even $$; investing time in your essays can have a big pay-off too. Good luck with the decision!
