GMAT score evaluation

by mba2017 Mon Aug 08, 2016 7:28 pm

I took the GMAT today. My score is 720 (Quant 50, Verbal 38). Unfortunately, it falls below the 730ish average of a couple of the top schools that I'd like to apply to. My IR score is 5 out of 8.

Other details:
Undergrad and Masters: Georgia Tech, Engineering
GPA: ~3.7 and ~3.5
Work Experience: three technology companies, well known. ~8 years.
Extra-curriculars: most significant - raising $2500 for a charity
Schools trying to target: top 5, a couple in the top 10-15 as safety schools

Should I retake the exam or start focusing on the applications?

Thanks!

Hi there,

Nice job on the 720, and especially the 50 quant. You are so close to the top schools' averages, unless you have score 750's or more on practice tests I'd likely stick with the 720. But let me know if you DO feel you can do a lot better. Most likely the decision will be made based upon the rest of your application, and as an engineer, it may come down to how you stand out vs other engineers, and where you've shown leadership and management skills over the years. Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks for the advice! I'll probably stick with this since I haven't averaged over 750 on my practice tests.
