GMAT Score Eval

by gothic00000 Mon Mar 12, 2012 1:49 pm

Hello,

I got 690 (88th percentile) on the GMAT (46Q/39V i.e. 73%/87%). I'm an Asian female.

I'm currently finishing up a Computer Science degree from a well-known Canadian university, so I will apply 3-4 years down the road.

I'm looking into Columbia or Stern. My quants score was lower than I expected, and my verbal was much higher than expected. Since I'll have an undergrad CS degree with a fair bit of math, would that help accommodate the lower quants score?

Also, should I retake the GMAT now? I think I'll only be able to get 10-20 more points, so I'm not sure if it will be worth another month or two of prep. I would also like to wrap up my final year on a happier note, as opposed to stressing over the GMAT, though that's not a valid reason.

If I retake it a few months later or a few years, that will use the new format. I'm not sure how the new format will be like.

If I have a good application a few years down the road (after some work experience as a PM/BA) and a 690 on the GMAT, what will my chances of getting into Columbia be? As well as Stern? Will a 690 hinder my chances?

Thanks!

I am not sure where the right place is to ask a similar question so I will try here first, apologies in advance if I am supposed to start my own topic.
I got 690 (Q45, V38) and the same 88 th percentile above.
I have been working in the IT consulting feild for 5 years for a globally renouned IT delivery/implementation consulting firm.
My UG major was INdustrial and SYstems Engineering from a state university that is ranked amongst the top 5 programs my issue is that my gpa was 2.48 and that puts me in troubled waters.

The schools I am aiming for are the top 15 schools in the US.
Darden,COlumbia,Stern,KEllog, BErkeley.

Thanks,
Ayush

Hi!! A 690 puts you within the range for both schools, but on the lower edge. If you thought you could boost your score any higher, I would suggest taking the GMAT again - especially because you have time before you are applying to school. Given your major, there may be an expectation that your quant score could be higher. If you decide not to take the GMAT again, you might consider writing an optional essay where you lay out your quant skills.

Also, keep in mind that the AdComs aren't just looking at your score. They will also consider your professional experiences, extra-curricular activities (especially those where you take on leadership roles) and your recommendations. All of those factors are also very important in the application process.

Best of luck,
