Gmat score 540, need help

by RadhakrishnaL972 Wed Aug 06, 2014 12:10 am

Hello,

Thanks for the help.

Yesterday I took my GMAT exam and scored 540. Though, I am not disappointed, which I will explain later, yet, I know that this is not a high school.

A short introduction about me, I am an Indian, Professional Engineer with 9 years of work experience.

My journey with GMAT began when my profile got short listed for one of the B school in India in the month of June, june 27 the exact date.

Then, I consulted one of my friend he suggested me to prepare using official guides, considering that the amount of time which I have is very less.

I took GMAT Prep test 1 and scored 400, without preparation. I wanted to check my weak and strong areas.

I prepared using OG alone, for a month, took test prep 2, and scored 440, dismal performance.

Then I gave a mock quant paper, in which I secured 40 marks.

On the GMAT day, I was able to boost my score by a 100 marks, hence, total is 540, with Q 45, V 20.

My friends actually say that I have the potential to crack upto 760 in GMAT. Considering that my quant is high, without any guidance, I guess that this is true.

That's the problem, I don't know how to boost my score in verbal. I don't have any issue with English language, as I write blog, I have done public speaking and also an 'A' grader in my high school public exam, even in English language, which actually is a rarity in India, considering that those who opt for science struggle with English. My science subjects are also 'A' grades.

One thing which I have guessed about myself is that I am short of mock tests, I am not sure though.

My preparation strategy:

-> Test prep 1 - 400, without preparation.

-> OG Quant supplement -> 30 questions daily, for PS and DS

-> OG Verbal supplement -> 30 questions, with 3 days split, one day for RC, one day for SC and one day for CR

-> OG guide -> quant PS 30 questions, quant DS 30 questions.
For verbal, 30 each daily.

-> I had prepared my own notebook for sentence correction tips, writtne mathematical formulas, and kept on revising them.

I intend to write GMAT after 6 months, because, I need a job right now, as I am out of job. Need to join the gym again ;) and besides, would like to take professional help this time.

Once again, thanks a lot for helping me.

Good work so far!

Your preparation the first time was focused on practicing problems - but the OG guides only provide practice problems. They don't teach you what you need to know for the test.

This time around, you'll need to be put together a more robust study plan that focuses you on learning what you need to learn for this test (vs. trying to pick it up yourself just by doing lots of problems).

Read this:

Use that to put together a preliminary plan (or, if you like, research classes that you might want to take) and then come back here to check your plan with us!
