GMAT Retake Strategy

by shilpa0592 Fri Oct 11, 2013 9:17 am

Hi,
I recently gave my gmat and scored a dismal 610. My quant score was terrible. (36). I have always been weak at quant/math but the last week before the test, I felt like I could definitely improve and get a higher score if I worked a little harder. I kept wishing I had more time but unfortunately, I did not postpone my test.

I plan on giving the gmat again but I really need help with quant. If you could help me with how to go about it, I would be grateful. I honestly don't know how to get the score up. Like I said, I know if I put in more effort it will go up. But I don't know how exactly to achieve that. Another thing is, should I give my retake within a month or study for a little longer?

I have been using the og, MGMAT books, and Kaplan Premier.
My weak areas are FDPs, word problems and inequalities. I'm stressing on these because I know they're very important and appear frequently on the test.

Thanks!

You don't mention what score you'd like to get on the test, so it's hard for me to advise you on how much time to take - but I'll guess from your description of your quant score as "terrible" that you're looking for a decently higher score. In that case, 1 month is not enough time.

There are multiple ways you might go about improving on quant. I'll help you with self study ideas here. Given that you're feeling a bit lost, you may also want to think about whether you want to consider some outside help with more structure (eg, a class).

First, read this; it will help you develop the mindset you need to succeed on this test:
https://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/inde ... lly-tests/

And then this; it will help you learn how to study better (follow the additional links given in the article):
http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index ... -the-gmat/

I'm also going to guess that you have timing issues (because everyone does!), so read these two and start doing what they say:
http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index ... -to-do-it/
http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index ... nt-part-1/

If you'd like to get more targeted advice, use the below to analyze your most recent MGMAT CAT(s):
http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index ... ice-tests/

Figure out what you think you should do based on that analysis (and your review of the other articles linked above).

Then come back here and tell us; we'll tell you whether we agree and advise you further. (Note: do share an analysis with us, not just the raw data. Part of getting better is developing your ability to analyze your results - figure out what they mean and what you think you should do about them!)
