OA is B

A product that represents a clear technological advance over competing products can generally command a high price. Because technological advances tend to be quickly surpassed and companies want to make large profits while they still can, many companies charge the greatest price the market will bear when they have such a product. But large profits on the mew product will give competitors a strong incentive to quickly match the mew product’s capabilities. Consequently, the strategy to maximize overall profit from a new product is to charge less than the greatest possible price.

In the argument above, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

* The first is an assumption that forms the basis for a course of action that the argument criticizes; the second presents the course of action endorsed by the argument.
* The first is a consideration raised to explain the appeal of a certain strategy; the second presents that strategy
* The first is an assumption that has been used to justify a certain strategy; the second is a consideration that is used to cast doubt on that assumption.
* The first is a consideration raised in support of a strategy the argument endorses; the second presents grounds in support of that consideration.
* The first is a consideration that has been used to justify pursuing a goal that the argument rejects; the second presents a course of action that has been adopted in pursuit of a goal.

Hi,
I think the correct option should be option B.

E cannot be the right choice 'coz of the error in the first part of option E-----first is a consideration that has been used to justify pursuing a goal that the argument rejects.

Now, the goal is to make money .... and the author says that "the strategy to maximize overall profit from a new product is to charge less than the greatest possible price." ----- This means he also agrees with the goal and hence DOES NOT REJECT that goal !!

I hope this is satisfactory! ....

Regards ...... Sam

I believe it is E. The "appeal" is not the right word I would say it is a factor to be considered in achieving a certain goal.

What's the official answer?

* The first is a consideration raised to explain the appeal of a certain strategy; the second presents that strategy

Here it does explain the appeal of a CERTAIN strategy. It's not THE strategy. It does raise an appeal by pointing the extreme greatness of charging the highest price possible.

* The first is a consideration that has been used to justify pursuing a goal that the argument rejects; the second presents a course of action that has been adopted in pursuit of a goal

This one is clear cut, it does not reject anything.

please don't do this. if you already found a different thread on this problem, why are you posting a new thread?
if you find an existing thread dealing with the problem about which you want to post, then POST YOUR QUESTIONS ON THE EXISTING THREAD. we do not want huge numbers of threads dealing with the same problem; if we have that, then users will be unable to find all of the relevant threads without a huge and unnecessary amount of effort.

if you (or other posters) do this again -- quote a thread that already exists, but then turn around and create a whole new thread anyway -- then we will delete the new thread and kindly ask you to re-post your questions on the existing one.
thanks.

in the argument at hand, there is only one goal in mind: namely, the companies want to make as large a profit as possible. there is no ambiguity about this goal; the only conflict in the passage is between different strategies for achieving the same goal.

the first strategy considered by the passage is setting the price point as high as possible in a given market. this strategy is ultimately rejected, because, according to the passage, such a high price point will bring competitors into the market more quickly and will thus lead to smaller profits in the long run.
after rejecting this strategy, the passage promotes an alternative strategy: namely, charging a price that is somewhat lower than the maximum possible price.

B * The first is a consideration raised to explain the appeal of a certain strategy; the second presents that strategy

this is the correct answer.

the first boldface is the rationale behind the strategy of charging the maximum possible price; the second boldface presents that strategy itself.
notice that these answer choices don't actually say that the strategy is ultimately rejected -- but they don't have to, as long as they are not saying anything that is incorrect.

E * The first is a consideration that has been used to justify pursuing a goal that the argument rejects; the second presents a course of action that has been adopted in pursuit of a goal.

this answer choice is incorrect, because the passage does not reject a GOAL.
the passage rejects a certain strategy for achieving a goal, but then it adopts another strategy -- ultimately for achieving exactly the same goal.

you must read these answer choices extremely carefully -- for instance, here it's absolutely crucial that you notice what, according to the answer choice, is being rejected.
if the first line said "a consideration that has been used to justify pursuing a strategy that the argument rejects", then you could make an argument in favor of this choice. however, the choice doesn't say that.
