GMAT Prep CAT Question

by kyle.steiner123 Mon Oct 07, 2013 7:37 am

Is X>0 and Y>0 ?

(1) 2X - 2Y = 1

(2) X/Y > 1

I know that statement 2 tells u that X and Y have the same sign and statement 1 can be simplified to X - Y = 1/2...but it seems like both cases (both positive and both neg) will satify both statments making the answer E.

ex. X = -2 and Y = -5/2 will satisfy both statements
ex. X = 2 and Y = 3/2 will satisfy both statements
making the original statements unable to determine.

The software says the answer is C but I can't see how. Please let me know what I am doing wrong here.

Thanks,
Kyle

No.
-5/2 is -2.5.
-2/-2.5 is not greater than 1.

Try a few more pairs of negatives, and you'll notice the pattern quickly -- it'll be clear why they don't work in both statements.
