Gmat Online Physical Whiteboard Strategy

by JohnK678 Wed Jun 24, 2020 3:35 pm

Hello,

I am not sure if this questions has already been answered, but I was wondering if you had any advice or tips on how to set up and use the physical whiteboard on the Quant and Verbal sections. Do you also have any suggestions on how to keep track of time, similar to how you suggest to set up the in-person GMAT booklet. Thank you!

Hi! I wrote a blog post on this very topic. :) Here it is:
https://www.manhattanprep.com/gmat/blog/online-whiteboard/

The title is still about the online whiteboard, because we updated a post I'd already made before, about just the online whiteboard (when that was all we had). Take a look and let me know what you think (and let me know any questions)!

Hi Stacey,

I'm also wondering about the physical whiteboard, if you have any info about these topics.. it would be great... (i'm waiting to register for the online exam right now..)
Can you erase the board during the it during the sections? or only in between them?
And if you can use 2 sided physical whiteboard , and write on both sides? (the GMAT isn't mentioning anything about it on their site)

Thanks

Ariel

Hey Ariel,

I recently took online GMAT and can confirm that you can erase anytime you want. You must erase before and after the exam. You must erase before and after the break, if you decide to take the break.

I have also heard that you have to show that the whiteboard is completely clear at three specific times:
(1) before the exam starts
(2) at the end of V, before you take the break
(3) at the end of the exam

During a section, yes, you can erase any time you want.

Re: double-sided, that's a great question! I also just looked at the relevant page on the mba.com site and don't see a mention of this. I've sent in a question to them to ask about this and will let you know if I hear back.

Heard back from GMAC and YES we can use a double-sided whiteboard (as long as it complies with all of the other requirements, of course).

Yay! That doubles our scratchpad real estate! :D

Hello! Do you have any physical white board suggestions? Would be extremely helpful to find one that works perfectly.
I've found a few on amazon that is 12x16 but i'd like to maximize the real estate to the max allowance (12x20) and if i can find one that's double sided EVEN BETTER

Please advise. Thank you so much!

I don't have any specific suggestions, unfortunately—I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending specific products without actually ordering a bunch and testing them out. I took it before the physical whiteboard was allowed, so I never needed to order one. (I have also looked on Amazon and noticed that it's hard to find something that's close to 12x20 without going over.)

Everyone else reading this: Have you ordered something that you liked / that you think works well? If so, let us know the name of the product and where you ordered it!

Hello!
Unfortunately, I can't help you which whiteboard is best to buy,
since I am still in the process of finding out how to use the physical whiteboard. :D

I was wondering if the whiteboard has to be positioned so that the laptop camera can see what I am writing.
Or can I just put the whiteboard on the table in front of me like a piece of paper?

You will be able to put the whiteboard down flat on the table, but they will ask you to pick it up and show it to them at certain times.

At the beginning, they'll ask you to show them your room and the whiteboard to make sure you're using one of the correct size. And they may ask you to show it again at various points, including at the end of the exam (to prove that you've erased it / aren't trying to save any info about the problems you saw on the test).
