Before GMAT, I looked at some prep debriefs and found them insightful. So, I thought I'd post my experience too, with the hope that the debrief will help some one else in the race.
I took GMAT on 4/16/08 and got 760 (99 percentile M:50 and V:42). I scored 690 (90 percentile) a while ago, but I wanted a better score to apply for some top schools.
Materials Not to Use:
Kaplan, Princeton, Barrons, Arco, and other ubiquitous online forums & CAT tests. GMAT is very specific with the topics it covers. So, try to practice as close as to the official guide.
Materials to Use:
MGMAT Prep books - All of them.
MGMAT CAT Tests
MGMAT Question Banks
MGMAT Online FORUMS.
OG 11th Eidtion
GMAC Verbal and Quant Prep guides.
GMAC retired GMAT paper tests - optional.
GMATPrep and PowerPrep software.
GMATSets and 1000 SC, RC, CR - optional - If you have more than 2 months to prepare.
Strategy:
1. Do the diagnostic test first. Understand your strengths and weaknesses.
2. If you have ample time as in 2/3 months, work both on your strengths and weaknesses. If time is critical as in 2/3 weeks, work more on your strengths.
3. While practicing (non SW), always adhere to time. Instead of doing one question at a time, do blocks of questions and time them. Try not to exceed 2.5 mins per question in the beginning and then shorten it to 1.5 mins later.
4. Don't be a perfectionist, practice strategic guessing techniques. And also build your stamina. Sitting 4 hrs for the test can be quite painful.
5. Keep log of incorrect questions and understand the concepts behind them. I spent approximately 50% more time on reviewing incorrect questions than on doing new ones.
6. Do not waste time doing every question you find on the Internet. Keep the practice material as closes to GMAC OG as possible.
7. Do a CAT test at least once every two weeks.
8. IMHO, 6 - 8 hrs per week is quite sufficient for GMAT, if you do not bulldoze yourself with all the material the Internet has to offer.
Good luck!
