GMAT 690 | Should I take the exam again?

by gcchadha Thu Jun 02, 2011 1:54 am

All,

I took GMAT day before yesterday and got score of 690 (Q 48, V 37). I'm contemplating whether I should take the test again to improve my chances of getting into a good program. I'm planning to apply for full time MBA program at UC, Kellogg, NYU, Ross and Columbia. Here is my profile in brief:

- Undergrad in Comp Sc from India with GPA ~3.5
- Work ex of 1.5 years in India working for a global software consulting firm
- MS (Comp Sc) GPA 3.5
- Working for past 4 years in software development with some project management responsibilities

Please let me know if you guys think that I should take GMAT again and get a >720 score to improve my chances of getting into the above mentioned schools.

Thanks a lot!

Hi GC,

Thanks for writing in. While your score is probably a bit lower than you would have liked given your target schools -- it is a really well-balanced score, cracking the 80% mark in both categories. If you think you can add points while still maintaining that balance than it may be worth a retake, but a well-balanced 690 is likely to be perceived better than an unbalanced 700-710.

Since you are part of the of male Indian computer science cohort, a high GMAT may be expected to compete with your peers. But I encourage you to also focus on your other points of differnetiation -- whether it be your work experience or extracurricular activity.

Best of luck!
