GMAT 680, interesting split...good enough for top 10?

by monterrosa Sat Nov 13, 2010 10:10 pm

I just took the GMAT and scored 680 with an interesting split of 87% verbal, 68% math.

I graduated in Bioengineering, trader at a hedge fund, CFA level 3 candidate...all quant heavy material. I know the 680 score is about 30 points below average for most top schools, but does this split help me since my quant abilities have been proven elsewhere?

And for why I did so poorly, I've been so use to calculators, high level math (calc), and time constraints got to me.

Hi moneterrosa,

Thanks for writing in. You can certainly point to your quant experience at work and CFA certification as proof that you can handle quant work. But it's unlikely that admissions committees will likely just "add" points to your score since you have that experience. After all, time constraints and lack of calculators is part of the challenge of the GMAT. If you want to aim for schools with median GMATs in the 700+ range, you certainly can do so, but you'll want to frame your application in a way that highlights other strengths that can overcome your GMAT score.

Good luck!
