gmat 680, healthcare background : should i retake ?

by pwangdoo10 Fri Jul 30, 2010 3:35 pm

Hi ,

I posted this in the "GMAT day " forum but i guess this whould be the right place for it, so reposting it :

I gave my GMAT two days back and have got a score of 680 ( Q 43 V 39) .

A bit of background info : I am 31 years old , internal medicine physician from India . I have a work experience of 6 years in the healthcare industry , including community service as well as corporate style of working ( similar to "hospitalist" type practice pattern in the US. )

I am planning to move into healthcare management or pharma industry , and my target programs are the top 20 colleges in the US , with a preference for those with a stronger healthcare elective .

During the preparation , my CAT scores were in the 680 - 700 range for MGMAT , 670 on Kaplan diagnostic and 720,740 ,760 and 770 on the power prep. Should i give the GMAT again and try to get a score in the range of 720-740 or is the above score above considering that medicine is not an over represented background.

I am looking forward to scholarships also , and perhaps a better score should help more .

thanks for your valuable time . looking forward to your advice ...

Hi pwangdoo10,

Thanks for writing in and sharing your background. A 690 is in the range for just about all schools, although the median score at the overall top tier will be a bit higher.

While you can certainly apply to these schools with a 690 and emphasize your other strengths, if you think a 720+ is feasible you may want to reconsider taking the exam again. Keep in mind you will be among the older applicants within the pool, and so a stronger GMAT score, combined with a clear explanation as to why now is the right time for you to get an MBA, could help boost your chances.

Good luck,

Daniel Richards
