Getting into a top business school?

by jdelmund Fri Jan 18, 2008 6:53 pm

Hello,

I am currently studying for the GMAT and I am definitely interested in getting into a top business school. What I'm wondering about is if there is anything else I need to be doing, maybe as far as extra-curricular activities go, i.e. do I need to do volunteering work, etc.?

Here are my credentials so far:
- Graduated with honors (Cum Laude) 2001 in BS Computer Engineering
- Received my MS in Computer Engineering 2005 while working full-time
- I've been working in the Wireless industry full-time since July 2001, as a Senior Software Engineer
- Practicing Judo (martial arts) 1.5 hrs to 3hrs per week
- Training for a half-marathon this year

Thank you,
jdelmund

Focus on organized group activities that you really care about or that you enjoy. As an engineer, that's the biggest concern "on paper" for an adcom - you need to work against the stereotype that engineers have poor interpersonal skills and/or are one-dimensional solitary individuals. Showing that you're a well rounded person who happens to be an engineer is the best way to improve your chances.
