General Advice

by jmozaffa Tue Oct 12, 2010 11:13 pm

Hi,

I recently took my GMAT and scored 610. I graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and a minor in Management from the University of California, Irvine (GPA:3.4), and I've been working for 3 years post-college at an advertising agency in LA. I started out as an assistant and was promoted to a Media Buyer over one year ago. I know my GMAT score is not very high and I plan on re-taking the exam in hopes to improve my score in time for application deadlines. I know that I've now put myself in a situation where I have to continue studying for the test and work on applications but I do plan on applying for Fall 2011 admissions. Can you please help me with a realistic look on what schools I should aim for? I hope to improve my GMAT score by 40-50 point at least.

Thank you!

Hi jmozaffa,

Thanks for writing in. It's difficult to say exactly which schools are right for you without knowing much about your preferences for geography, area of focus, post-MBA goals, etc.

There are dozens -- if not more -- of programs that your GMAT would fall in the range for, especially if you raise it into the mid-600s.

I suggest identifying schools that meet your interests in terms of career focus and then seeing what their 20-80 GMAT range is (they should all have this on their website or on any of the big ranking websites). From there pick the few that seem to be the best fit for what you're looking to get out of an MBA program.

Good luck!
