Gearing up for HBS

by abhishek.pitti Sun Mar 01, 2009 8:52 am

Hey,
Thanks for your help in Advance

I am an Indian Citizen

I have a bachelors in Aeronautical Engineering
I have a Masters in Aerospace Engineering
I worked FedEX and GE as Interns
I am currently working with Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation as an Engineer
I am Vice President for Professional Development in Gulfstream Management Association (GMA part of NMA- National Management Association)
I am part of the class that we offer for Certified Manager course through GMA
I am was also vice president of Indian Association of Savannah
I have applied for tution reimbursement program in my company this year, I was thinking for applying Masters in Accounting, as that would cover all my prerequites for a business school in accounting and eventually write CPA exam as the accounting program gears you up for that. I am not sure if that's gonna hurt m profile for a business school. So far I have a good career progression according to me but want to get a professional opinion.

Also, if MSC in accounting will hurt, do you think I have any other better options of study courses that I can apply to so that I can help my profile build up to what it takes for HBS. I currently, hold 1 year 7 months of full time work ex excluding co-ops. I am written my gmat early this month, q48, v21 and awa 6.0....I couldn't finish the complete verbal section and left 3 question cuz of time...so writing gmat again.

Please help!!!

Thank you so much,

Sincerely,
Abhishek

Why are you applying to b-school if you're looking to do a CPA and Masters of Accounting? (presumably to become an accountant?).

My suggestion is to do a lot more basic research (hint: you can't waive out of courses at HBS, so you're going to have to take accounting even if you have a CPA, Masters in Accounting, etc.). It looks like you are trying to collect credentials, when you should be focusing on developing leadership achievements and interpersonal/team skills (not academic skills).

Also, I hate to say this but you are likely overestimating your candidacy for schools like Harvard. Again, you have to do a lot more research into this and when you do, you will realize that you can probably get where you want to be career wise by choosing schools that are more in your range and a better fit for you (and maybe through that research you may realize you don't need an MBA at all depending on what you want to do with your career).

Hey Alex,
Thank you for your response. I think what I need to know is what else can I do to get to a standard where I can apply for MBA in HBS. I don mean to overestimate my present credentials or underestimate the standards of HBs but all I want is someone like you to help me orient my profile to be equivalent to somebody with similar background and to someone in the class for MBA in HBS.

You are right, I was trying to gather credentials to see if I can substitute that towards my Work ex.

I would appreciate if you think you can help.

Thank you,

Abhishek

So what CYA reasoning you would put forth to explain your no-nonsense non-advice you gave the then prospective applicant to HBS few years ago

This is what Mr Chu has to write about himself in his MBA consulting website
"A personalized, no-nonsense admissions consulting service designed to help you get into the world's top business schools of your choice."

The way he responded to an innocuous question from a prospective applicant above, just goes to show that he is just another run of the mill MBA consultant who seem to pop up like mushrooms these days.

Another nugget of Mr Chu's MBA wisdom,
"I hate to say this but you are likely overestimating your candidacy for schools like Harvard"

Mr Chu - My advice is that you first try to learn being polite and then get off your high horse before giving your so called expert advice about who can and cannot apply to HBS.

And by the way, how much do you charge for such 'consulting services'?

Hello,

My name is Mili Mittal and I'm a consultant with mbaMission managing this forum. I just wanted to clarify that the person that you are referring to below ("MBAApply"/"Mr. Chu") is not a member of our team and his opinions and statements in no way reflect our firm. mbaMission is the only consulting firm that Manhattan GMAT partners with due to our shared values, quality of service and the positive reviews their students give us, and we make every effort to uphold that reputation.

We do our best to manage and ensure that responses to your queries come only from one of our consultants, but unfortunately, we cannot always control who participates. When we do find such imposters, we promptly ban them from our forum and delete their posts. We must have missed this one back in 2009 -- our apologies! Please note that this individual has since been banned from our forum.

Thank you,

Thanks for the clarification. My message was for just that one person and by no means a statement against all consultants. I think MBAmission and others have earned a good name by the commitments and hard work of their consultants.
