For vs Because of

Source: Manhattan Gmat Test
Though Frank Lloyd Wright is best remembered today because of bold designs like the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, most of his buildings were intended to blend into their surroundings.

A. because of bold designs like the Guggenheim Museum
B. for bold designs such as the one for the Guggenheim Museum
C. because of bold designs such as the Guggenheim Museum
D. because of bold designs such as that for the Guggenheim Museum
E. for bold designs like the Guggenheim Museum's

Hi staff, my answer was C, and I read the explanation. I can understand that it incorrectly implies that the museum itself is a design. However, I am not sure when should I use "For" or "Because of"?
Since B is the correct answer, does it mean phrases are always followed by "because of", and sentences and phrases could be followed by "for"?
I will really appreciate it if someone can explain it to me!! Thank you so much!

The choice between "for" and "because of" is only there as a distraction. A/C/D are all wrong for other reasons.

* A and C suggest that the museum itself is a "design". That doesn't make sense.

* In D, "that" (singular) can't stand for "designs" (plural).

Hi there,

I would choose E because of 'like + the Saxon genitive'. Why is it wrong?

Also, the student says that B is the correct answer, however to me it seems that a number agreement is missing in that precise answer choice. In fact '....the one for the Guggenheim Museum...' Should refer back in the sentence to designs, which is plural. Correct?

Thanks a lot!

Please check out this thread, Elisabetta. It contains all sorts of discussion about why the construction with "one" in B is okay and why E should be ruled out: sc-though-frank-lloyd-wright-is-best-remembered-t5121.html
