Hi dear Ron! Thank you very much for you information :D

your suspicion is justified!

since "each" works alone, you're talking about ALL of the dwellings.
"with" modifiers should describe only a component/aspect/sub-part of the previous observation; they shouldn't characterize the entire observation.

more on this idea here:

Whoa! I actually read that thread a few weeks ago -- I like how you and Tadashi sent posts back and forth and the conversation went to a really deep level (it's a hell of interesting things to learn). It took me 2 hours to process all the information and it is a pleasure to read.

And what even surprised to me that information discussed in there can solve my question here -- I didn't realized they are connected!

lots of things are connected to lots of other things.

in fact, here's a useful rule for setting priorities: if you learn anything that applies to just one problem, you can safely ignore it.
ANYTHING that's important on this test—really, anything at all whatsoever—will turn up repeatedly.

in other words, once you've made substantial progress in SC, you should realize that it tests fewer things than you originally thought, but more thoroughly.

just keep going—with an emphasis on quality, not on quantity—and you'll get there.

Dear instructor,
I am little confused about the usage of "each" as in the "each a roof of poles and arrowweed". Is "each" a pronoun?
If so, isn't it more accurate to say "each had a roof of poles and arrowweeds" or "each consisted of a roof of poles and arrowweeds"?
Thanks in advance for your kind reply.

Regards
Andy

if you want to call it a pronoun, then call it a pronoun. if you want to call it a pink unicorn, then call it a pink unicorn.

the point, of course, is that terminology will NOT help you understand what's going on here. in fact, terminology is MUCH more likely to impede your understanding.

here's what i mean:
let's say we do decide to call 'each' a pronoun. (i honestly don't know what it 'should' be called.)
okay... how is this going to help you?
the answer is that it's not going to help you, because you have an existing framework in your head for what pronouns do, and this example clearly doesn't fit into that framework. so, if anything, that framework is going to get in the way of your ability to understand what is happening here. you're trying to force a square peg into a round hole.

you have only two tasks of non-zero importance here:
1/ LEARN how the construction works
2/ MAKE YOUR OWN (simple) EXAMPLES of it

if you can do these two things, you have learned 100.000000% of everything worth learning about the construction.

these are both run-on sentences (complete sentence + comma + complete sentence). so, both are incorrect.

MUCH more importantly...

DO NOT question the correct answers!

here's a handy FAQ:

Q: Is the correct answer wrong?
A: No.

Q: I wrote this other version. Is it better than the correct answer?
A: No.

Hi ron,
Thanks for the explanation. Always appreciate your clarificaiton. As you always advise in almost every post, I am trying to accept the OA as it is. But sometimes wondering if I am missing some advanced grammatical construction.

FYI, I laughed a bit when you said pink unicorn. :)

Regards
Andy

in all seriousness, if this one construction is annoying enough (or counterintuitive enough) for you, you may actually WANT to call it a 'pink unicorn', because then you'll definitely remember it!
in particular, i would bet $$$ that you'd recall it (and be able to use it) much better than if you just knew it by its grammatical name, whatever that might be.

there's a limit to this, of course; you can't make up crazy names for everything. in fact, honestly, you probably shouldn't make up 'colorful' names for more than a small handful of ideas.
but, if some idea keeps resisting your intuition... adopt it! give it a name!

Hi Ron,

I don't understand the meaning of the correct sentence, especially with the presence of "each" in the sentence:

What does each stand for here?

and,

Does the right sentence mean "each dwelling was supported by posts set"?
or
Does it mean "a roof of poles and arrowweed each was supported by posts set"?

Thanks in advance!
