Fired - What to do?

by tygoon_hill Fri Nov 26, 2010 9:25 pm

Hi, I was recently let go from my position. I have already submitted all of my apps (hopefully) so do I need to contact the schools to let them know? I was already planning on quitting in a month anyhow to travel, but obviously this does not look good. Also, how should I go about explaining it in an interview? I don't want to sound defensive, but my boss/company did not like me and the reason I was let go was stupid.

Hi Tygoon,

Thanks for writing in and sorry to hear about this news. This is a really tough one -- some schools may indicate that you are required to update them of any significant changes in your job status, and this would certainly qualify under that. And most schools will do full background checks upon admittance/your acceptance, so this would definitely come out then.

My advice would be to write a short letter to the admissions office of the schools you applied to. Try not to focus too much on the boss not liking you and the reasons being "stupid," but rather you can state you are no longer employed there and are awaiting your next career move pending the result of your application.

You want to avoid having this come up later in the process and potentially leading to a revoked admissions offer.

Good luck!
