What is difference between fewer than and less than?

Briefly, "fewer than" is used when the items are countable (eg. hats, number of airplane flight delays), and "less than" is used when the items are not countable, which usually means they must be measured with a measuring device such as a beaker or clock (eg. water, cumulative time of flight delay)..
