Extremely Perplexing GMAT SC problem

The Washington monument's defects in its supporting structure that led to its deterioration have been corrected, according to the engineers at the National Muesuem of American History.

B) The Washington monument's defects in its supporting structure, leading to its deterioration
C) Leading to its deterioration, the Washington monument's defects in its supporting structure
D) The defects that the Washington monument had in its supporting structure that led to its deterioration
E) The defects in the supporting structure of the Washington monument which led to its deterioration





This is an altered question not from the OG. I promise! You can check yourselves. Its completely altered. What I would like to know is if the OA for this question (highlight over here) E is indeed correct. Because something feels terribly wrong about this question. Is the usage of "which" in the OA correct here?? Whats wrong with original answer choice. It is just as direct as the OA. They both start with "defect", albeit in (A) it starts out with the possessive. Please any word from you masters would be deeply appreciated. And again, I hope that because I have altered the question and because it comes from a non-OG guide, that I am still allowed to post this question on this forum. Thank you!!!
