Evaluation for EMBA application

by imtrying Wed Nov 26, 2008 3:25 pm

I'd like to understand what my realistic chances are. Here are some stats:

Took GMAT today: Q50, V45 - overall 770.
AWA: expected be 5.5 or 6.

I work in New York financial industry on the software systems side. I manage a team of 10 engineers/developers on a profitable, industry-ranked trading platform for past two years out of six years work experience in total (in addition to being an assistant manager to wife supervising a toddler and a baby :))

I have a master's in computer engineering and undergraduate degree in electrical engineering both from good engineering schools, good GPAs.

I'm looking to getting into one of the Summer 2009 EMBA programs of the following Northeastern schools:
Wharton, Columbia, NYU Stern, MIT Sloan, Yale, Cornell, or any other Northeastern schools of similar rep.

I don't really have commendable extra-curricular or extra-work activities given that I am also a family man of 31 years of age. I am an avid extreme sportsman of my own right though, if this helps at all. I should be able to get company sponsorship, at least in part.

What are my shots? Am I aiming about right? I wonder what the real situation is, now that the economy takes a nose dive and drive people back to school.

Any feedbacks are very much appreciated.

There are several reasons that I'm going for EMBA.

1. age consideration, I'm 31 and don't want to sit with kids.
2. monetary constraint - can't go full time and pay for the house
3. school offerings - wharton and columbia don't seem to offer part time programs
4. future plan: being Chinese, I'm planning to go to greater China region in 5 to 7 years. Asian cultures seem to value good degrees from decent schools

You should be competitive for any of the EMBA programs you listed.

Unlike full-time programs, EMBA programs don't really care as much about extracurriculars - instead, they value experience and you're in that right age group. So long as your GMAT is decent (and yours is strong) and you are a seasoned professional (i.e. you're not a kid, but have 8-10 years experience), then your chances are pretty good so long as your written application and interviews are strong.

Alex,

Thank you for the opinion and the reassurance I was hoping for. I do have some misgivings.

For economic and family reasons I mis-spent two of my youthful years and therefore only had 6 years of full time working experience. So I'm not exactly confident about my application. After joining my current firm (a mid-sized wall street finance firm) three years ago, I did rise fast in my division of the company. This division was acquired from outside as a profitable unit, but very badly managed both in terms of technology and sales. Within two years, under the leadership of the director and my management, we rebuilt the team, revamped every technical aspect, and built a superior platform. Now I am the VP of the most mission critical team in this division, and I am trusted with responsibility whenever the director is away. I hope an essay on this topic can somehow explain away my lack of years in work experience, in order to qualify the EMBA adcom.

I think I may need some help in preparing my packages to various schools. Will follow up after taking a break and gathering some thoughts in early December.

Happy Thanksgiving!
