Evaluate profile

by oyerakesh Thu Jul 21, 2011 3:47 pm

Hi there,

I'd like to know what B-Schools I should aim for admission (provided I score decent in GMAT):

What do I want to do?
I want to start with Social Entrepreneurship, then will switch to politics. After mba, I'd like to head back to India!

GMAT score: didnt take the exam yet

Education background:
BSc (mining-mechanical engineering) from India, GPA 3/4
Summer Intern at UofPaderborn, Germany (during undergrad)
MSc (mining engineering), Uni of Alberta, Canada, GPA 3.7/4

Experience:
1.5 year as an Engineer-in-trainee in Canada, did not do much supervisory work but I managed asset worth $80 million in terms of maintaining 8 major mining equipment.

Additional info:
-I am running a startup with employee strength 10 for last 9 months, its a self funded tech start-up, one product recently launched, getting decent feedback but no big success yet
-Running a project back at my village in India to educate adults who didn't get opportunities to go to school.
-Assisting two non-profits in Canada to develop web portals and fund raising
-was elected secretary of engineering department and discharged my duties for one year.
-I have 5 research papers published

Thanks for your time :)

Cheers
Oye

Hi Oye,

Unfortunately there really isn't much information here for me to work with. While GMAT is not the only factor in admission it is an important one in forecasting what tier of school you should be looking at. Additionally you will need to concentrate hard on your goal statement -- the leap from engineering to politics is quite non-traditional and the schools are going to want to see evidence that you've thought this through and can explain why it works for you, and how an MBA will help with your ambitions. There could also be some valuable content in your startup and volunteer work -- and potentially more leadership evidence here than your current job calls for. If you want to write back with some more details -- and perhaps some ideas of what schools you're thinking about or even what part of the country/world appeals to you, I'd be happy to try and elaborate further.

Best of luck,

Daniel Richards
