Evaluate my profile(GMAT=640), 5 years job experience

by rishuoberoi Wed Oct 20, 2010 5:41 am

Hi,

I got the same score in GMAT=640
quant=49
verbal=28(never got so low)

I was very confident of getting a call from ISB, applying to R2 for 2012 batch. But now i feel chances are bleak.

My profile is:-

5 years job experience in a Top Internet company of the likes of Google and yahoo , developing high performance web products used by millions of people.
Pursuing social entrepreneurship along with my job and working with a ngo on a number of projects.
Launched a beta site , as a social enterprise and also got it selected in a reputed MBA school's B plan competition.
I am also a fellow with a reputed organisation committed for collecting changemaker around the world and taking them to places and have been to another international conference for change makers.

With this gmat score, i am just too scared to apply , at the same time i feel .... my profile might help me and compensate for a bad gmat score.

I wish to concentrate more on my application than gmat now.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi rishuoberoi,

Thanks for writing in. It is true that strengths in some areas can offset weaknesses in others, but there is no way to predict exactly what is needed to do that. In your case, it seems that you are about 50 points below the median for ISB, but I do think that unbalanced score could hurt you.

If you think you can raise that GMAT score, it might be worth taking another attempt if you have the time. But if you decide to apply with this current score, you'll want to point out instances in your work or extracurriculars that show your communication skills (to offset your verbal score), as well as tell a clear story as to how your experience to date fits into your post-MBA goals.

Hope that helps and good luck!
