EIV 4th edition, p. 93

by dhlee922 Mon May 14, 2012 5:55 pm

for the optimization problem that starts halfway down page 93, i'm confused by the wording of the question.

The question says:

If -4<= m <= 7 and -3 < n < 10, what is the maximum possible integer value for m - n?

then in the table towards the bottom of the page, the answer is highlighted as the 3rd choice, LT10. Why isnt the answer the 2nd choice, GT-14?

is the word Maximum in the question supposed to be equivalent to positive? otherwise the Maximum integer value is obviously GT-14

thank you

10 is definitely a higher number than -14. maximum does not require the value to be positive, but given a choice between 10 and -14, 10 is the maximum..
